About 8 Squadron, Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF)
The 8 Squadron of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) was used to operate the Caribou DHC-4A transport aircraft based at Labuan Air Base in 1966 until it ceased operations in October 1993. As part of the CAP55 Action Plan Phase 1 (2021-2022), 22 Skn was officially renamed to 8 Skn, effective February 4th 2022, to continue the role of the former in operating the A400M transport aircraft. This transition was marked by a Squadron Parade, where the 8 Skn badge was presented to its executive officers, and was conferred by the Commander of the Subang Air Base, Brig Gen Omar bin Hj Dawami RMAF to Squadron Commanding Officer, Lt Col Yusrizal bin Zain RMAF. Since January 5th 2015, The A400M has been crucial in tactical and strategic missions, including Air-to-Air Refueling, MEDEVAC, HADR, and international exercises. It also played a vital role in air delivery assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, the functions and roles of the 8 Skn are those of the former 22 Skn, with the name change marking a unique history for the RMAF. 8 Skn upholds its motto, ‘Teguh Merentas’ in carrying forward the legacy and mission of No. 22 Skn.
